Ima Shiney Playboy, ‘Bonsai’, is a 7 year-old, 14.1 hand, thick and shapey palomino gelding. We have owned Bonsai for over four years. We have a lot of history with Bonsai and his dam and have always thought the world of them. Bonsai is your horse if you make your living roping steers or tying calves, want to win $100k at the new breakaway ropings, are a competitive weekend jackpotter that wants to chase $150k purse at the World Series ropings, a trail rider that wants to enjoy your time on the trail, or a rancher that wants to be damn-sure mounted on a right-sized, good looking gelding that does it all with a smile on his face. This a perfect-aged, fancy looking, fancy bred cow horse with all the buttons and a million hours of training. Bonsai was brought along slowly in his three and four year-old years being used extensively as a ranch horse on our 300-head angus operation in the Badlands of South Dakota. In the rough open country, we do all our cattle work horse back, from sorting pairs, branding and dragging calves, pasture doctoring to moving pairs, scattering bulls or sorting dries. Bonsai has seen all of this for multiple seasons and bar none this is one of the top ranch horses I’ve ever stepped on. He is free moving, soft in the face, ribs and hips, and super kind. A pleasure for anyone to ride. He always wants to see what is over the next hill. Bonsai is truly a pleasure for pasture doctoring, sorting or getting in an ornery yearling, but still kind enough that our 11 year old son pushes cattle up the chute on him all day. Bonsai is at the age where he isn’t going to come apart with some time off. He doesn’t get fresh or frisky and has no hump or buck ever-guaranteed, and I won’t say that about a horse often.
We have used Bonsai in the arena for heading, heeling, break-away and tie-down roping. Bonsai has been hauled extensively in all four events across multiple states. He is barrier broke and has seen all the set-ups, seen the lights and the music, and has been hauled thousands of miles to big outdoor set-ups as well as tight indoor pens. He is a proven arena performer of the highest caliber. He is a very free-moving and extremely fast. He never gets short or takes away a shot or dally. He is an awesome mover that eats up cattle and he’s extremely fun to rope on. While this horse is for anyone for any activity, I would recommend a #5 or higher or comparable roper for this horse as he is a driven performer in the arena. This is a special horse that, in my opinion, has no limit on the caliber that he could be under the right roper. He really enjoys his work and is a kind easy horse to catch, haul and just have around. Our family has really enjoyed him and I’m confident that yours will too!
